Estimating Mulch or Soil in Yards
1. Find the square footage of the area the mulch will be placed. (Length x Width=Square Feet)
2. Choose how thick you want to lay the mulch, then convert it to a decimal
1''=.08 ft 4''=.33 ft
2''=.16 ft 5''=.42 ft
3''=.25 ft 6''=.50 ft
3. Find cubic feet with the formula below
Square Feet x Depth (in feet)=Cubic Feet
4. Divide cubic feet by 27 to get the amount of cubic yards that you need.
Example: To fill an area 100ft long by 30ft wide with 3'' of mulch
100 x 30=3000 Square Feet
3''=.25 ft
3000 Sq Ft x .25 = 750 Cubic Feet
750 Cubic Ft / 27 = 27.8 yds of mulch
